Classical Music Video on Location.....

July 17, 2017

We dd a classical music concert video a few weeks ago - did it in 4K resolution and then delivered in 1080P. It took place at Brandeis University a hall with decent acoustics especially once you add a touch of ambience/reverb to liven up the sound.

Ideally i like to do music without an audience either before they arrive or even better - dress rehearsals....Often to get the best sound and video camera angles there has to be some freedom of movement - otherwise looks like a security cam video of a concert....Although I can accomdate all types of requests.....In this case the performers were quite fussy about no movement of cameras people during the we set up a few stationary cameras as best we could ....set up some condenser mikes with a Tamron DR60D (decent sound for the price ) and put a few cameras in the back trying to shoot over the seats...

During a concert with multiple staging arrangements i like to re-adjust mike settings and placement but we didn't have that option this time so we made do with what we had.....

The performers wanted a promo video piece for publicity purposes and all in all i think we did an Ok job given the limitations.....

I've often seen some fantastic video productions throughout the world  of early music or chamber music filmed in churches....often astonishing images and angles but of course normally filmed up close with no limitations on movement or placement....

Like all things I suppose it comes down ultimately to priorities and needs....A successful classical performer could conceivably perform 100s of concerts a year with no photogs lurking about  to stress over - but to get a great video representation of it requires some degree of compromise to ensure great results....

All in all though, we did a fairly good job some great audio and a lot of good shots....even if we did from a respectable distance....
